Alibaba’s YuanjingOS Lays Off Employees: After YunOS, It Also Gives Up on the Metaverse OS

During the metaverse boom in 2021, Alibaba Group Holding Limited established a wholly-owned subsidiary called “YuanjingOS” with a registered capital of 10 million RMB to focus on metaverse-related businesses.

Three years later, Alibaba YuanjingOS – a team that once invested several billion yuan and had hundreds of employees – underwent large-scale layoffs. Many employees reported October 31 as their “last day,” affecting teams in Hangzhou and Shanghai. This is another operating system that Alibaba has voluntarily exited from after YunOS.

YuanjingOS is known as a metaverse cloud streaming operating system and application computing architecture for the next generation of the Internet, which is a brand of real-time cloud rendering, meta-application computing technology, and metaverse services founded by Alibaba Group Holding Limited.

Reports mentioned that in the early days, YuanjingOS was a technology provider under Alibaba Group with real-time cloud rendering and real-time cloud streaming as its main core technologies. Six months after the establishment of the business unit, Alibaba released the first version of its PaaS platform, providing a similar experience to PC games on Android devices. YuanjingOS began its journey in cloud gaming. In September 2021, Alibaba officially launched the brand “YuanjingOS” and introduced a cloud gaming developer platform in October of the same year. ‘The goal is to become the Android system of the metaverse era,’ likened by a member of YuanjingOS team.
