OnePlus 5T to Launch as OnePlus 5 Remains ‘Sold Out’

The OnePlus 5 phone has been “sold out” for four months, according to the OnePlus website.

That “sold out” notice could mean the company has been unable to keep up with demand. On the other hand, it might mean a new phone is on the way. Android Authority recently unveiled a rendering of the OnePlus 5T, which suggests it won’t be long before we see a new model.

GizChina also released front images of the OnePlus 5T. The handset has a 18:9 full-screen, which is popular in this year’s models. The phone has a 6-inch screen with a resolution of 2160×1080 pixels. The screens of OnePlus 5T will continue to be Optic AMOLED units provided by Samsung.

Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus, said in a 2015 interview that OnePlus wouldn’t place its touch ID on the back of the phone. However, OnePlus 5T follows most Android manufacturers by placing its touch ID there.

Lau’s reversal may be explained by his Weibo. He said,

“Among all the products that have touch ID on the back, the Samsung Galaxy S8 is the only one I appreciate (although I think putting the touch ID beside the lens can be a little… you know what I mean). You can only sacrifice user comfort if you want to highlight an extraordinary feature. Otherwise, it simply isn’t worth it.”

Putting touch ID on the back may be the most cost-effective option before better solutions are available.

The OnePlus 5T offers minimal improvements in hardware configuration. The handset will be equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Processor, 8GB RAM, 128GB of storage, and an Android 8.0 operating system. The configuration is demonstrated in an AnTuTu Benchmark screenshot.

Both front and back cameras use 20 megapixel sensors. Recently, Carl Pei, co-founder of OnePlus, posted an image on Twitter that may have been taken by the OnePlus 5T. The photo shows the OnePlus 5T camera has a high resolution even when in a low light environment.
