XPeng G3 SUV Catches Fire in Shenzhen
An XPeng G3 electric vehicle model caught fire in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen on Monday evening, the same day that the automaker released its 2021 financial report.
In response, XPeng said that no one was injured and that the company will fully cooperate with relevant departments to investigate the cause of the incident. The firm also said it would continue to follow up on the results and assist customers with related matters.
This is not the first time that XPeng has grappled with concerns over its vehicles catching fire. On April 14, 2021, an XPeng car burst into flames while charging in Guangzhou. On August 11, 2020, another of the firm’s cars caught fire in Haizhu District, Guangzhou. Both vehicles involved were the XPeng G3.
After the August 2020 incident, XPeng divulged that there were serious bumping scars on the bottom of the car’s battery box, indicating serious damage.
The G3 is XPeng‘s first model, having gone on sale in 2018. At present, its 2021 version – available in seven variations – is on sale with a price range of 168,900-203,900 yuan ($26,519-$32,014). It is equipped with a ferrous lithium phosphate battery or lithium battery, with a maximum battery capacity of 66kWh and a cruising range of 520km.
In addition to the reported accident yesterday, XPeng also released its unaudited financial data for the fourth quarter and whole year ended December 31, 2021. The total revenue in fiscal year 2021 was 20.99 billion yuan, an increase of 259.1% from 2020.
XPeng Motors currently has three models for sale. Deliveries of the P5 smart family sedan sustained solid momentum following its mass-delivery launch in October 2021 and reached 5,030 in December 2021. Deliveries of the P7 smart sports sedan were 21,342 in the fourth quarter of 2021, representing a year-on-year increase of 150%.
