300 Chinese SAIC-GM-Wuling EVs Serve G20 Summit

During the ongoing G20 Leaders’ Summit in Bali, Indonesia, auto companies from China, Japan and South Korea offered 836 pure electric vehicles to the Indonesian government, 300 of which were from Chinese automaker SAIC-GM-Wuling’s local subsidiary. Taglines reading “G20,” “Made in Indonesia” and “Shaping Clean Tomorrow” have been pasted on the cars’ bodies, and Wuling Indonesia’s “Air ev” new energy vehicle painted with the local traditional Badik art style has attracted attention.

“Wuling Automobile is one of the electric vehicle brands that provides travel services for leaders and delegations attending the G20 Leaders’ Summit,” Pratikno, Minister of State Secretariat of Indonesia said to media in October. “Because this brand has a manufacturing plant in Indonesia, it is given priority. We want to convey to the public one of the themes of this G20 Summit by using electric vehicles, that is, the transformation from fossil energy to more environmentally friendly energy.”

For each delegation to Bali, the Indonesian government has allocated five EVs from this brand, and the rest will be provided to the organizing committee of the summit.

“During the 12-day summit guarantee period, each new energy vehicle is expected to drive 50 kilometers per day, and 300 new energy vehicles can reduce carbon emissions by about 33 tons,” said Qin Zhenjie, the head of the G20 project for Wuling Indonesia, adding that the firm sent more than 10 on-site support staff members to serve at the summit.

Since 2015, Wuling has invested a total of $1 billion in Indonesia, building the largest automobile manufacturing base with investment from a Chinese company in Indonesia so far, creating more than 10,000 jobs in the local area. In recent years, Wuling Indonesia has launched five models locally, with cumulative production and sales of more than 100,000 vehicles. The Air ev new energy vehicle serving this summit is produced in Indonesia. Since its release in August this year, the cumulative order volume has exceeded 4,500 vehicles, ranking first in the sales volume of NEVs in Indonesia, accounting for an 85% market share.

Since the beginning of this year, Chinese car companies have accelerated their exploration of global markets, and new energy vehicles such as BYD, NIO, XPeng Motors and Wuling have landed in overseas markets one after another. According to data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, in the first three quarters of 2022, Chinese automobile enterprises exported 2.117 million vehicles, exceeding the entire export volume of 2021, including 389,000 NEVs, which more than doubled year-on-year.
