BYD and ADL Jointly Produce Over 1,000 Electric Buses in the UK
According to the website of the Chinese Consulate-General in Edinburgh, Consul General Ma Qiang paid a visit to leading British bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) in Falkirk, Scotland on Tuesday to tour the production lines of electric buses manufactured in partnership with Chinese automobile company BYD.
ADL’s Factory Director Euan Cameron and BYD UK’s Production Manager David Berrie introduced Ma Qiang to the cooperation between ADL and BYD in the production of pure electric buses. Cameron said that the cooperation between the two sides is progressing smoothly. Up to now, the successful eBus venture has delivered over 1,000 electric buses, covering 50-70% of the UK market over the past decade. The buses have been put into operation in more than 10 cities such as London and Glasgow. Last year, the fleet of ADL-BYD zero emission buses provided shuttle services at the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, demonstrating the venture’s strength in green transport and technology.
Cameron also said that ADL is willing to further strengthen its cooperation with BYD to complement each other’s advantages and achieve mutual benefits and win-win results.
ADL, a subsidiary of bus manufacturer NFI Group Inc., headquartered in Scotland, is the largest bus manufacturer in the UK and one of the largest double-decker bus manufacturers in the world. ADL produces single-level and double-decker buses, as well as Plaxton buses, and has expanded its coverage from the UK to China, Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand, the US and Canada.
BYD reached cooperation with ADL in July of 2015. At that time, the first deal was to jointly build the first large-scale zero-emission single-level electric bus fleet of 51 units for London. In recent years, the two sides have also been working together to develop new bus models.
In February, BYD announced the successful delivery of 29 electric double-decker buses to Abellio London. The vehicles were jointly built by BYD and ADL, and currently serve route 63 operated by Transport for London.
