Huawei Launches Health Research Projects
Zhang Wei, CEO of Huawei Sports Health Legion, announced three major health research projects being sponsored by Huawei in Shenzhen on Tuesday. The projects include blood sugar, pulmonary function and high altitude health research. He also shared futher enhancements to Huawei’s own sports health technology and the upgrading of HUAWEI TruSeen vital signs monitoring technology IP.
The company said that its TruSeen vital signs monitoring technology will improve its health data detection capabilities and further its progress since the company commened the program seven years ago. HUAWEI TruSeen has now been upgraded from a 4-channel to an 8-channel annular optical path design for its heart rate module, while the built-in sensor design has changed from decentralized to cohesive. In terms of appearance, the rear design of the watch has been changed from a plain and clear bottom to cambered sapphire. It also improved the accuracy of the device’s heart rate detection, mainly through diversifying sports scenarios, wider crowd differences and changing environmental factors.
In terms of consumer-oriented products, taking HUAWEI WATCH D as an example, its weight is about 1/6 of that of the upper electronic arm blood pressure monitor. Its double-layer airbag increases the device’s fit and compression, in order to sense the change of pulse waves when measuring blood pressure. The pressurization range of the air pump is 300mmHg while the measurable maximum blood pressure can top 230mmHg, which is the same as the measurement range of traditional sphygmomanometer.
Huawei is continuously increasing its efforts in the fields of heart monitoring, blood pressure, circulation and respiratory health. In 2022, Huawei will carry out three new health studies that concern blood sugar, pulmonary health, and high altitude health management.

In the field of blood sugar research, Huawei is aiming to secure a more convenient and comfortable screening process while offering better management of hyperglycemia risk in invasive, minimally invasive and non-invasive technology. In the field of chronic respiratory diseases, Huawei has launched two major respiratory health research efforts, namely, pulmonary function research and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease screening research. The company wants to help users identify health risks in a more timely manner and achieve a more accurate and comprehensive chronic disease management with better active health management.
For sports, Huawei has developed its own unique sports system called TruSport. In 2021, for running scenarios, Huawei launched its Running Ability Index (RAI), which is a comprehensive index to measure the endurance level and technical efficiency of runners, and it is measured against their best results. Generally the higher the RAI, the better the runner will be in competitive settings.
Huawei said that based on the TruSport standard framework, it will expand from running applications to other sports situations, such as swimming and cycling, and it will open TruSport capabilities to support more end user products. The new research field being launched will also be functionally integrated into end user products in the near future.
