Meizu Reveals New Concept Phone Meizu Zero With No Buttons Nor Ports

2018 was a rather quiet year for Meizu compared to its industry peers. This year, however, the smartphone brand started out by making headlines with a radical concept phone—Meizu Zero.

Meizu has been known for making phones that show great resemblance to iPhones, but it seems like the new Meizu Zero has its inspirational roots elsewhere. It has no buttons, speaker grilles, charging ports, or even a SIM card slot.

The phone comes without a headphone jack, but that’s no longer a surprise to the market. What’s new is the lack of a USB Type-C port, meaning the phone will rely solely on wireless charging. Meizu claims that the device can support fast wireless charging at up to 18W output, making it one of the fastest wireless charges yet. Most other handsets in the industry currently charge at around 10W.

There are also no speaker grilles as the phone screen doubles as a speaker, vibrating to produce sound. This technology has been seen in other smartphones such as Xiaomi‘s Mi MIX, but the audio output left much to be desired. Meizu claims to have improved the technology since with the Zero.

The Zero adopts an eSIM configuration, meaning users will not be using a physical SIM-card. Apart from the two microphone holes in the bottom, it’s just a ceramic block. Unsurprisingly, the port-less device is therefore water and dustproof with an IP68 rating.

The traditional volume and power buttons have been replaced by virtual haptic ones, similar to the digital home buttons on the recent Galaxy flagships and the iPhone 7 and 8 series.

In terms of more conventional specs, you’re looking at a Snapdragon 845 chipset, a 5.99-inch OLED display with an in-display fingerprint reader. The device will run on Meizu’s latest FlymeOS and come with a dual-camera setup. Battery capacity and detailed specs have not been announced as of yet.

Although Meizu’s marketing team is calling this “the world’s first seamless, ‘uninterrupted’ phone”, they aren’t the only company looking to leave buttons behind. Vivo unveiled the Apex 2019 on Jan 24, just a day after Meizu.

There’s still no word on when either phone will be released but Meizu ensures the concept phone will go on sale eventually.
