Former 01.AI Core Member Joins ByteDance’s AI Team Amidst 01.AI’s Strategic Refocus

Earlier this week, media reports suggested that ByteDance is secretly preparing to establish a large-scale model research institute, with Qin Yujia, founder of Sequoia Tech, and Huang Wenhao, a former core member of 01.AI , joining ByteDance’s large model team. A person close to ByteDance revealed that ByteDance has long-term plans to strengthen large model related research, but has not decided to establish an independent institution. Furthermore, this person stated that Huang Wenhao is responsible for technology project management and planning, reporting to Zhu Wenjia, the head of ByteDance’s large model team.

Today, in response to the news of core member Huang Wenhao joining ByteDance, 01.AI stated that the company structure has been adjusted recently to focus more on the company’s business. Top model training and product managers from both domestic and international backgrounds have joined the company, further implementing the “model application integration” strategy and continuously validating the TC-PMF (Technical Cost and Product-Market Fit). 01.AI will soon introduce new products and solutions to the market.

01.AI, an AI 2.0 company incubated by Kai-Fu Lee, Chairman and CEO of Sinovation Ventures, focuses on large model technology, AI algorithms, natural language processing, system architecture, computing power architecture, data security, and product development. The core team members come from companies such as Google, Microsoft, IBM, and Baidu. In November 2023, 01.AI released its first pre-trained large model, Yi-34B. In May 2024, 01.AI officially announced a one-stop AI work platform, WanZhi. In June, 01.AI’s Yi-Large series of large models officially landed on Alibaba Cloud’s BaiLian platform. This is the first time 01.AI has provided API services through a cloud vendor.
