Adjustments in Tesla Model 3 Delivery Times Indicate Changing Demand in China
Tesla’s Shanghai factory typically focuses on exporting large numbers of Model 3 and Model Y vehicles during the first half of each quarter. Later in the quarter, the factory shifts its focus towards domestic deliveries. This pattern results in a noticeable decrease in exports and an increase in domestic deliveries in the latter part of the third quarter.
Recently, however, reports have indicated a change in this pattern. The estimated delivery time for the Model 3 in the domestic market has been extended, which is an unusual occurrence. This extension suggests that the demand for this electric vehicle within the domestic market may be on the rise.
Previously, customers ordering any version of the Model 3 on Tesla’s official website, whether it was the rear-wheel drive, long-range all-wheel drive, or performance all-wheel drive, could expect a delivery time of 4-6 weeks. But since mid-July, this delivery estimate has been progressively reduced. It was first shortened to 3-5 weeks and then further reduced to 1-4 weeks at the start of the third quarter.
In the week ending September 8, 2024, Tesla China marked a high point for the third quarter with 16,200 new car registrations. The refreshed Model 3 accounted for an estimated 6,400 of these registrations, marking the highest weekly registration volume for this model in the third quarter of the year.
Despite this, Tesla has adjusted the estimated delivery date for new Model 3 orders in the China region. According to the official website, customers can now expect a delivery time of 4-6 weeks for all versions of the Model 3. This change suggests a balancing act between domestic demand and production capabilities.
