BYD Plans to Introduce the “Tang” Model in Japan

BYD will launch a 7-seater model – ‘Tang’ in Japan to enrich the current product lineup available in Japan.

This is the fourth type of vehicle from BYD in Japan following compact SUVs, small cars, and sedans. In addition, BYD Han and Qin will also be introduced to Japan one after another.

BYD’s deployment logic in the Japanese market is consistent with its European strategy. In addition to the Qin model, all the above-mentioned models have been launched on BYD’s official website in Europe.

Internal staff of BYD Japan’s distribution system revealed that “currently, internal preparations are underway for the launch of a 7-seater new model (BYD Tang) to avoid affecting the target audience of Sea Lion.” Recently, the 2025 BYD Tang pure electric version was launched first in Europe, priced at 72,000 euros, following a luxury high-end route.

BYD sold a total of 31,451 new energy passenger vehicles overseas in August 2024, with exports accounting for 30,451 units.

However, the launch dates for BYD Tang, Qin, and Han in Japan are still uncertain. There are many variables affecting BYD’s development in the Japanese automotive market, including policies, qualifications, and locations. In terms of importing automobile qualifications, the Japanese government has very strict requirements. Sources said that BYD’s Dolphin was originally planned to be launched in Japan last year but was postponed due to testing certification issues until June this year.
