Alibaba’s AI Cancer Detection Tool Listed on Fortune’s 2024 Change the World List

Alibaba Group Holding Limited was selected for the 10th annual Change the World list by Fortune magazine, ranking 8th and becoming the only Chinese company in the top ten. The list aims to recognize companies that drive innovation and social impact through their profit models.

The editorial team of Fortune selected 52 out of 250 nominated companies, with Alibaba standing out thanks to its artificial intelligence cancer diagnostic tool PANDA developed by its research institute Damo Academy. This tool can quickly and economically screen early symptoms of cancer, especially pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma which causes nearly 500,000 deaths globally each year. Studies show that PANDA has a sensitivity in cancer screening that is 34.1% higher than radiologists and achieves more efficient tumor detection through non-contrast CT scans. The tool is currently being used in two hospitals in Zhejiang Province and has been expanded to detect various other types of cancers.

Le Lu, head of Damo Academy, stated that Alibaba‘s goal is to cover the entire cancer treatment process with AI technology to make diagnoses more accurate and services more accessible. In addition, Alibaba is using AI technology to improve social welfare in other areas as well. For example, last year at the Asian Games, they introduced ‘Xiaomo,’ a digital avatar capable of bidirectional translation between sign language and Chinese to help hearing-impaired individuals participate in activities. This year, Alibaba launched an AI tool for creating picture books for children with autism which has already been used by 50,000 people.

Sun Lijun, partner at Alibaba Group Holding Limited emphasized that technology should enhance quality of life through more convenient, fairer and inclusive services; demonstrating Alibaba‘s vision and actions towards social impact.
