Tesla China: Cybertruck Currently Has No Plans to Be Sold in China
Recently, there have been rumors circulating that the Tesla Cybertruck is expected to be officially introduced in China, attracting attention from all sectors. However, on December 2nd, Tesla China responded that there are currently no plans to sell the Cybertruck in China.
Reports indicate that due to various restrictions on pickup truck models and vehicle safety regulations in the Chinese market, the angular and polygonal design of the Cybertruck would require significant funds for vehicle adjustments. The actual market sales potential may be very limited. Cui Dongshu, Secretary-General of the China Passenger Car Association, pointed out in an interview that the exterior design of the Tesla Cybertruck does not yet meet domestic regulatory standards. Its special steel plate material and sharp design pose challenges to pedestrian safety protection.
According to the national standard “Technical Conditions for Safe Operation of Motor Vehicles” implemented since 2018, any parts or components that may be touched by passengers inside and outside the vehicle should not have any sharp protrusions that could cause injury, such as sharp corners or edges.
On the other hand, most cities in China have clear restrictions on pickup trucks. The truck attributes of pickups and mandatory scrapping after 15 years will directly affect the residual value of vehicles. They must undergo annual inspections each year and are not eligible for free highway tolls during holidays.
Currently, some imported Cybertrucks have been successfully registered in China. On August 16th this year, a Cybertruck with license plate ‘津 A DM6357’ was spotted on the streets of Tianjin, which may be the first Tesla Cybertruck successfully registered in the domestic market.
Tesla’s Cybertruck also started touring in various parts of the country earlier this year, but Musk once said that it would be difficult for the vehicle to legally hit the road in China.
