TikTok Owner ByteDance Seems to Have Bought AI Music Startup Jukedeck
TikTok’s parent company ByteDance might have acquired Jukedeck, an AI music startup behind a tool that can automatically generate tunes, allowing users to regulate their length, tempo and several other attributes. The rumors about the possible acquisition have been circulating since the beginning of the year. Recently, Music Ally noticed that the founder of Jukedeck and several of his colleagues updated their LinkedIn profiles mentioning ByteDance as their employer.

The move is expected to give TikTok, which is currently fully reliant on licensed music, an opportunity to readjust its monetary and licensing policy, while becoming more independent from music labels. The incorporation of Jukedeck’s technology into the TikTok app will give users more creative control over their content, allowing them to customize music to fit their short videos. Currently users can only choose from a library of copyrighted songs like “Old Town Road”, the world’s biggest hit, which was propelled to international success by TikTok.
ByteDance has not commented on the issue yet, but the LinkedIn profile changes and the fact that Jukedeck’s website is currently offline are likely proof that ByteDance has gone through with the acquisition.
