Bloomberg had also reported on ByteDance’s plan to develop an office collaboration tool resembling Google’s G Suite with a focus on cloud-based file management. 36Kr confirmed that this product is the upcoming Lark Doc.
Lark Doc will support common file formats including documents, charts and slides. Sources say that Lark Doc will use self-developed formats by ByteDance for all its online files to ensure a smooth experience transitioning between different Lark services.
Demand for office collaboration tools has soared because of the COVID-19 outbreak. According to SensorTower, Lark reached a peak of 22,000 downloads per day in China from Apple’s app store during the epidemic. Apart from ByteDance, Tencent’s Tencent Meeting and Google Doc-like platform Shimo are two other major players in the office collaboration realm. On March 2, Tencent Meeting announced that it had reached 160 million active monthly users, while Shimo recently completed its B+ round of funding, receiving tens of millions of dollars.
