WeChat Resumes New User Registration
After carrying out a series of technology security upgrades, Tencent on Thursday resumed new registrations for WeChat personal and official accounts.
The WeChat team previously announced that the security technology was being upgraded on July 27, and that new sign-ups would be suspended until early August when the upgrades completed. At that time, some netizens thought that the upgrade was to cooperate with WeChat’s other plans to rectify the wider network environment.

Tencent financial report shows that WeChat had 1.225 billion monthly active users last year, up 5.2% year-on-year. The latest version supports custom ringtones, an attention function to target specific group members and simultaneous log-in across multiple devices.
A series of state media announcements regarding the tech industry this week have raised concerns. Tencent saw its stock price drop 11% after a Xinhua-owned media outlet called online games ‘spiritual opium’ (a term that was later removed). Tencent immediately introduced a series of measures to protect minors.
