Vivo OriginOS Awarded CTTL’s First Five-Star Certificate for Personal Information Protection
OriginOS, a new generation of intelligent terminal operating systems introduced by Chinese smartphone maker Vivo, has been awarded a five-star certificate for its protection capability of personal information within its mobile intelligent terminal operating system. The certificate is the first of its kind for a mobile terminal made by China Telecommunication Technology Labs (CTTL).
As intelligent terminals are becoming increasingly popular and their application grow in use, many users are benefiting from greater access to more products and services but are exposing themselves to privacy and security problems. Intelligent terminals usually provide users with a feature called “sensitive functions”. If the operating system lacks control for sensitive functions, users are at a higher risk of having their personal information leaked. It seems too common these days that Apps could infringe on users’ rights and interests, which undermine their experience and puts them at risk.
For that reason, and to align itself with the Evaluation Scheme of Personal Information Protection Ability of Mobile Intelligent Terminal Operating System, CTTL conducted a comprehensive test and overall evaluation of its OriginOS 1.0 installed on a Y53S (T2 version) of Vivo. The test involved several stages, notably a test on the ability of the system to safeguard personal information in addition to tests on the system’s authority control and management ability for third-party applications. Finally, the test also checked the personal information protection ability of the system’s preset applications within the intelligent terminal. A total of more than 500 items were tested. As a result, vivo’s OriginOS passed all of the tests and was awarded the five-star certificate, the highest level possible.

The Chinese government has worked on the protection of personal information by means of several recent policies. On August 20th, the Personal Information Protection Law was passed and is scheduled to come into force on November 1st, 2021. The law states that personal information should not be excessively collected nor should any sort of price manipulation occur for similar tour products or services based on demand or customer identifier. Further, the processing of sensitive personal information such as face information will be regulated while the system for dealing with complaints and reports in regard to personal information protection should be improved.
