Since Alibaba’s introduction of UnionPay Mobile QuickPass on its Taobao e-commerce application in August, the service has now been extended to all users, according to reports by various Chinese media outlets. At the same time, Alibaba has further adopted WeChat Pay service on applications including Ele.me, Youku, Damai, Kaola and Shuqi, among others.

Apps such as used goods marketplace Xianyu and grocery-store network Hema Fresh have also applied to access WeChat for payment, and are waiting for the platform’s review.

Not long ago, some netizens reported that Alibaba’s new community e-commerce brand “Taocaicai” allowed users’ friends on WeChat to pay by scanning a QR code. Taocaicai was established from the merger of Hema Jishi and Taobao Grocery.

At the beginning of September, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) proposed new standards for instant messaging services such as WeChat. Alibaba, Tencent, ByteDance, Baidu, Huawei, Xiaomi, Hello Group, Qihoo 360 Technology, Netease and other companies all attended the meeting. On September 17, Tencent’s popular messaging app WeChat started allowing users to access external links.
