Alibaba’s Cainiao Signs Partnership with World Food Programme to Enhance Response Efficiency

Cainiao Network, Alibaba Group’s logistics arm, has entered into a strategic partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP), the world’s largest humanitarian organization. The partnership with the United Nations (UN) affiliate outlines a three-year strategic collaboration, focusing on areas such as global humanitarian emergency missions and supply chain capability enhancement. This marks a significant milestone as it is the first time for a Chinese logistics firm to become a global logistics partner of the WFP.

The WFP provides food assistance to individuals affected by conflict, disasters, and climate change while saving lives in emergencies. The organization deploys 5,600 trucks, 30 ships and 100 planes daily to deliver life-saving food and other aid materials to those in dire need. Cainiao aims to utilize its global logistics network advantage to assist WFP in reducing response time during crisis events while enhancing its global supply chain efficiency for more effective delivery of aid materials to those in need.

“We are thrilled to partner with Cainiao to beef up our logistics services and supply chain management capabilities, ultimately facilitating humanitarian efforts. With their extensive professional experience and advanced technology, we can improve the resilience of our supply chain, which will have a positive impact on the environment and our endeavours to aid the vulnerable,” stated Ramiro Lopes da Silva, Deputy Executive Director of WFP’s Supply Chain and Emergencies Department.

Cainiao’s CEO, Wan Lin, stated that the strategic partnership between the two parties signifies Chinese logistics companies’ active involvement in global humanitarian efforts. He further added that globalization is one of Cainiao’s primary strategies, with services extending to over 200 countries and regions worldwide currently.

Cainiao has made significant investments in emergency rescue efforts both domestically and internationally. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Cainiao delivered over 300 million medical and living supplies to more than 150 countries and regions worldwide. After the Turkey–Syria earthquake in February 2023, Cainiao provided its own warehousing and transportation resources to assist with relief supply transportation.
