April Mobile Phone Shipments in China Exceed 18M, Down 34.2% YoY
The China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) released a report on Wednesday analyzing the Chinese mobile phone market in April 2022. The report indicates that during the month, the domestic market shipped 18.079 million smartphones, down 34.2% year-on-year. Specifically, 14.585 million were 5G smartphones, down 31.9% year-on-year, accounting for 80.7% overall.
From January to April of this year, total smartphone shipments in the Chinese market totaled 87.425 million units, down 30.3% year-on-year. Specifically, the amount of 5G smartphones shipped were 68.469 million units, down 25.0% year-on-year, accounting for 78.3% overall.
General situation of Chinese smartphone market
In April 2022, 40 new smartphone models were released in China, up 25.0% year-on-year. Specifically, 21 were 5G smartphones, up 31.3% year-on-year, accounting for 52.5% overall.
From January to April, a total of 143 new models were released, down 7.1% year-on-year. Specifically, 78 were 5G smartphones, down 2.5% year-on-year, accounting for 54.5% overall.
Proportion of Chinese and foreign brands in China
In April 2022, the shipment of Chinese brands reached 16.427 million units, down 33.6% year-on-year, accounting for 90.9% of all shipments in the same period. 39 were newly-released models, up 50.0% year-on-year, accounting for 97.5% overall.
From January to April 2022, the shipments of Chinese brand smartphones totaled 74.077 million units, down 33.5% year-on-year, accounting for 84.7% overall. A total of 137 new models were released, down 2.8% year-on-year, accounting for 95.8% overall.

Development of Chinese smartphones
In April, the shipment of smartphones reached 17.69 million units, down 34.4% year-on-year, accounting for 97.8% of all mobile phone shipments in the same period. From January to April, smartphones shipments reached 85.774 million units, down 30.4% year-on-year, accounting for 98.1% overall.
Also in April, 36 new smartphone models were launched, up 38.5% year-on-year, accounting for 90.0% overall. From January to April, a total of 121 new smartphone models entered the market, down 2.4% year-on-year, accounting for 84.6% overall.
