Battery Giant CATL Denies Plan to Manufacture Vehicles
Through an interactive platform on Monday, Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) officially announced that it would not explore vehicle R&D and would not consider car manufacturing.
According to the data China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance, CATL’s market share has remained over 50% for two consecutive years, and has declined to only 47.05% in the first five months of 2022. In contrast, Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD’s market share increased to 22.58% in the first five months of this year, which was 6.38 percentage points higher than last year’s 16.2%.
In fact, the news of a vehicle manufacturing plan by CATL is not entirely groundless. On June 25, the Avatr 11 was released which was built by Changan Automobile, Huawei and CATL. CATL also built the CHN technology platform together with the other two platforms.
The products borne from CHN platform have the capabilities of high integration, high extensibility, high performance, high endurance, high security, strong computing, high intelligence and evolution. In the future, the CHN technology platform will be able to support the development of 3100mm long wheelbase models at the maximum. It can be adapted to cars, SUVs, MPVs, and other models, and is compatible with both two-wheel and four-wheel drive models.
For the CHN platform, CATL is focusing on power systems, energy management and charging networks, and will provide top-line technology and resource support for Avatr.

Earlier, CATL also released Qilin, the third generation of its CTP (cell-to-pack) technology. The integrated energy unit, which is composed of the cell and the multifunctional elastic interlayer, builds a more stable load bearing structure perpendicular to the driving direction, thus enhancing the shock and vibration resistance of the battery pack.
