Bilibili Denies Leak of User Accounts and Phone Numbers

According to a report by Southern Metropolis Daily on July 7, a screenshot of an offer to sell more than 220 million pieces of user data obtained from Chinese video community Bilibili was circulated on the Internet. The leaked data was suspected to include user IDs and phone numbers, with price tag of 0.5 bitcoin or 17.72 Ether. A Bilibili spokesperson denied the rumor on July 8.

According to the report, the reporter randomly selected some sample data for verification, and found that some user IDs correspond to Bilibili account numbers, but that some leaked phone numbers are actually expired.

A user ID is the identity certificate of Bilibili users and is public information. The data suspected of being leaked this time, however, needs to combine the user ID information disclosed by the user with a wrong smartphone number, which has created the illusion of a suspected leakage. After some investigation, analysis and comparison, it is confirmed that the leaked data is inaccurate.

In June this year, the Cyberspace Administration of China issued its Regulations on the Management of Internet User Account Information, which will take effect on August 1. The regulations require Internet information service providers to establish and improve their management systems such as true identity information authentication, account information verification, information security, and personal information protection.
