Board Director of Huawei: China’s 5G Penetration Rate Crosses Critical Point of 20%

In today’s speech at the Global Mobile Broadband Forum, Ryan Ding, Executive Director of the Board of Huawei and President of the Carrier Business Group, said that the penetration rate of 5G users in China, South Korea, Kuwait and other countries has crossed the critical point of 20%. Operators have now entered a new age of development for user growth, business returns and network construction.

“As long as the penetration rate of 5G users is high enough, it will be reflected in the commercial return. Once it exceeds the critical point of 20%, 5G will enter a stage of rapid growth.” Ding added.

According to a report previously released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the number of 5G mobile phone terminal connections in China has reached 419 million. By the end of August, there were about 1.63 billion mobile phone users in the three basic telecommunications enterprises.

High-quality 5G networks will promote the rapid growth of wireless data traffic. Huawei believes that by 2030, the average monthly internet traffic per household will reach 600 GB. If the energy efficiency of wireless network remains unchanged, the energy consumption of the whole network will increase dozens of times.

In order to achieve the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 45% in the information and communication industry by 2030, Ding has suggested operators build a green 5G network with energy saving performance through the management and control of power supply, distribution and consumption.

In addition, Ding also pointed out that Huawei has deployed low-carbon site solutions in more than 100 countries, including Saudi Arabia, Greece, Pakistan, Switzerland, etc., which has helped operators reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 40 million tons.
