BYD Involved in iPhone 16 Pro Production, Previously Invested Billions in Factory Acquisition
On August 28, Chinese media reports confirmed that BYD Electronics, a subsidiary of BYD Co. Ltd., will supply the frame for the upcoming Apple iPhone 16 Pro, taking over from the previous supplier, Jabil’s Chengdu operation. According to Apple’s official website, the iPhone 16 series will be officially released at 1 a.m. on September 10.
On August 28, 2023, BYD Co., Ltd. and its subsidiary BYD Electronics announced that BYD Electronics has signed a framework agreement with Jabil Singapore to acquire the product manufacturing business located in Chengdu and Wuxi for about 15.8 billion yuan in cash, including the parts manufacturing business for existing customers.
Jabil Technology (Chengdu) Co., Ltd., established in 2012, has more than 60,000 employees and factories in Chengdu City and Chongzhou Economic Development Zone. It is one of Apple’s partners and produces parts for Apple’s iPhone, Apple Watch and other products. When BYD acquired Jabil Chengdu, it was thought that BYD was emulating Luxshare Precision and hoped to enter Apple’s supply chain through this acquisition.
On March 20 of this year, Wang Chuanfu, Chairman and President of BYD Co., Ltd., appeared at Apple’s China headquarters in Shanghai and met with Apple CEO Tim Cook. Subsequently, a well-known whistleblower revealed that BYD Electronics will enter Apple’s supply chain and add “screen assembly related” business. In addition, an industry insider revealed that BYD is quietly becoming an important manufacturing partner for Apple’s new generation of flagship phones, taking over a large number of orders originally belonging to Foxconn.
