BYD Unveils 2022 Tang EV
Shenzhen-based automaker BYD unveiled its 2022 Tang electric vehicle (EV) on Friday, with a maximum CLTC range of 730km and an estimated price range of 300,000-350,000 yuan ($47,147-$50,005). Pre-sale of the vehicle is scheduled to start in mid to late April, and the product will be launched in mid-May.
The 2022 Tang EV is 4900 mm, 1950 mm, and 1725 mm in length, width and height, and its wheelbase is 2820 mm. The model is designed in BYD’s typical “Dragon Face” style, and features an active air intake grille and cut-through tail lights.
In terms of interior decoration, the 2022 Tang EV basically follows the firm’s current design and is equipped with a 12.3-inch full LCD dashboard and a 15.6-inch adaptive suspension central control panel. It features a built-in DiLink 4.0 (5G) intelligent internet system and 12 separate speakers.
In terms of power, the model has two motors with a maximum power of 180kW + 200kW, and it takes 4.4 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h. The two-wheel drive model adopts a 180kW single motor. In terms of battery life, the CLTC of the high-performance model and that of single-motor long-endurance model have a battery life of 635km and 730km respectively. Both models use a BYD blade battery.
As for product planning, BYD has launched a multi-network strategy in 2021. Current sales suggests the Dynasty series are the firm’s main source of sales volume. The Ocean series launched in the second half of 2021 has two categories, namely, pure EVs named after marine animals, and a hybrid series named after “warships.”

In 2022, BYD plans to work on the high-end market through two brands. First is Denza, a brand priced between 300,000 and 500,000 yuan. Denza will released three new models of pure electric multi-purpose vehicles from 2022 to 2023. Second is a brand-new high-end brand which is now under preparation. Previously, Li Yunfei, general manager of BYD’s brand and public relations division, said that BYD had scheduled the release of a high-end brand with an estimated price range of 500,000-1 million yuan in the second half of 2022. The new brand will be completely independent of other BYD brands in terms of product, sales services and operations, and the first model will be positioned as a hard-drive off-road vehicle.
