BYD’s Advanced Intelligent Driving Function to Be Installed on New Han Model

According to Chinese automotive media HiEV, BYD will introduce high-speed assisted driving function in its new Han model during the third quarter of this year. Additionally, some versions of Tang and Song models from the Dynasty series will also feature advanced intelligent driving functions. Meanwhile, Denza, F brand and Yangwang have either planned or announced their intention to equip their higher-end models with advanced intelligent driving functions.

Beginning in the third quarter of this year, BYD Han’s advanced intelligent driving solution will utilize Horizon Robotics’ Journey 5 chip, 11V5R sensors, JueFX’s high-precision positioning services, and Neusoft Reach’s domain controllers.

BYD has placed orders for advanced intelligent driving components from suppliers for its Song model. The company is also assessing on-board advanced intelligent driving features for the Tang model. Denza recently unveiled its hunting SUV N7, which is expected to be priced above 350,000 yuan ($50,453). The high-end version of the N7 comes with Navigate on Pilot (NOP) function and two RoboSense laser radars as well as a single NVIDIA OrinX chip. Some software algorithms are provided by Momenta. According to insiders at Denza, the new car will have basic L2 autonomous driving functionality when it launches in June, with higher-level functions being released gradually thereafter.

Yangwang is currently BYD’s top-tier brand, and its first car, the U8, has a pre-sale price of 1.098 million yuan. The U8 boasts three lidar sensors – one on the roof and two on either side of the vehicle’s wheel arches – while its autonomous driving computing platform utilizes NVIDIA Orin chips.

Over the past year, BYD has been actively recruiting talented individuals from Shenzhen, Shanghai, Xi’an and other locations to establish a team dedicated to autonomous driving. Additionally, BYD’s intelligent driving development team has collaborated extensively with various suppliers including NVIDIA, Huawei, Horizon Robotics, RoboSense, Hesai Technology, DJI, Baidu and Momenta.

According to an industry expert closely involved with BYD’s intelligent driving business, there has been a widespread misjudgment about the company. Many people believed that BYD’s competitors were other new energy vehicle manufacturers like Tesla. However, in reality, BYD positions its competitors as traditional fuel-powered car makers. A key strategy for BYD is to offer electric new energy vehicles at comparable or slightly higher prices than their fuel-powered counterparts while delivering a superior user experience.
