BYD’s First K6 Pure Electric Bus in Mauritius Enters Operation
Shenzhen-based automaker BYD announced Tuesday that it has recently delivered its first K6 pure electric bus to the largest state-owned public transport operator in Port Louis, Mauritius. This is also the first pure electric bus of any brand operated by the country’s National Transport Corporation.
BYD’s K6 pure electric buses are used mainly for intracity commuter purposes, allowing passengers to travel between subway stations. This represents a new green travel choice for tourists and citizens alike.
The East African island nation of Mauritius is located in the Indian Ocean, and is rich in volcanoes and mountains. To better satisfy needs in terms of local operations, the K6 series features an integrated drive axle assembly independently developed by BYD, a power battery and “Liuhe-I” high-voltage electronic control integration technology, making it specially designed for road conditions in Mauritius.
Models in the K6 series are 20-seat pure electric buses, capable of traveling as far as 225 kilometers in a single charge. They can also be charged and replenished by solar photovoltaic power stations. The buses feature IC card reading systems, DVD displays, multiple on-board speakers and other equipment. In addition, K6 buses are equipped with ergonomic high-back seats, on-board safety surveillance cameras, USB charging, display screens and other features.
Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, the Prime Minister of Mauritius, praised pure electric buses for facilitating a more modern, safe and environmentally friendly transportation system.
