ByteDance Establishes a Large Model Research Institute

According to reports from Chinese media outlet AI Tech Review, ByteDance is secretly preparing to establish a large model research institute and is actively recruiting talent.

Insiders reveal that several AI experts from outside the company have already joined the large model research institute and report directly to Zhang Yiming.

Starting from last year, ByteDance has gradually disclosed its progress on large model work. As previously reported by IT Home, in August 2023, ByteDance launched its underlying large model “Yun Que” and subsequently introduced its AI dialogue product “Dou Bao”. In May this year, ByteDance released the “Dou Bao large model” family, initiating a price war, claiming to be “99.3% cheaper than the industry average”.

In the past, the talent for ByteDance’s large model team primarily came from within the company’s business lines, including search, Douyin, Xigua, TikTok, etc. It was rare for the company to recruit top-tier talent externally. However, the talent strategy of the large model research institute differs from the past, as it is making significant efforts to recruit talent from outside the company.

Qin Yujia, a core member of the original Mianbi Intelligence, and Huang Wenhao, a core member of the original 01.AI team, have joined ByteDance’s large model team. It is currently unclear whether they belong to the large model research institute.
