CATL and Ford Kick off Global Strategic Cooperation

On July 21, CATL, a Chinese power battery giant, and Ford, a leading US automobile company, announced an agreement in which the two companies will establish a global strategic cooperative relationship covering power battery supply in China, Europe and North America.

According to another agreement signed by both parties, from next year, CATL will also supply lithium iron phosphate battery packs for Ford’s Mustang Mach-E models produced in North America. From the beginning of 2024, it will provide the same type pf batteries for Ford’s pure electric pickup truck F-150 Lightning produced in North America.

Ford also announced progress in its supply and cooperation of power batteries and related raw materials worldwide. It will achieve an annual production capacity of 60GWh power batteries by adding lithium iron phosphate battery solutions and ensuring the supply of related raw materials. This move aims to reach its annual production capacity target of 600,000 electric vehicles in 2023.

Both companies will explore new business opportunities on a global scale. In addition to providing Ford with lithium iron phosphate batteries based on CTP (cell-to-pack) technology, CATL will also actively cooperate with Ford in other battery technologies. They will promote the sustainable development of the new energy industry and the promotion of electric vehicles, and jointly help achieve the goal of global carbon neutrality.

In addition, Robin Zeng, chairman of CATL, revealed at the World EV & ES Battery Conference held on July 21 that the global market share of CATL reached 34% in the first half of this year. The company’s products now cover 55 countries and regions around the world, and its shipment of power batteries has exceeded 400GWh. Zeng pointed out that one out of every three electric vehicles in the world is equipped with a CATL battery.
