CATL Obtains World’s First UNECE Access Certification for EV Batteries

Leading Chinese battery firm Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) announced on Thursday that it has obtained the world’s first UNECE R100.03 approval for EV battery systems, granted by the German Ministry of Transport.

Globally, international standards and regulations are critical for improving the safety of EV batteries. UNECE Regulation No. 100, which addresses internationally recognized general requirements for the safety of electric vehicles, brought the R100.03 amendments into effect in June 2021.

The new regulation imposes higher requirements for EV battery systems and adds safety risk specifications regarding electrical safety, mechanical safety, environmental safety and functional safety. From September 1, 2023, all EV battery systems exported to the member states of the UNECE must obtain this certificate. CATL was the first company to obtain this certificate, indicating UNECE’s recognition of CATL’s battery system capabilities. This is conducive to the export of batteries to Europe.

In 2022, with the rapid development of the NEV industry, the demand for power batteries is growing rapidly. According to data on power battery shipments in January and February released by SNE Research last month, the shipments and market share of CATL were 18.4 GWh and 34.4% respectively, ranking first.

CATL is committed to updating its battery technology. Earlier this month, it announced it will release the Kirin battery in the second quarter of this year. According to a performance report released by CATL, its total revenue in the first quarter was 48.68 billion yuan ($7.24 billion), a year-on-year increase of 153.97%. Meanwhile, net profits decreased by 23.62% year-on-year to 1.493 billion yuan.
