CATL Plans to Establish 10,000 Battery Swapping Stations Across China

At the World Power Battery Conference held on September 1st, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) CTO Gao Huan revealed, “In terms of battery swapping station planning, CATL aims to reach 10,000 stations. In the short term, the goal for 2027 is 3,000 stations.”

According to Gao’s presentation, by 2025, CATL aims to have battery swapping stations in over 30 cities in China, with more than 500 stations in total; by 2026, it plans to cover more than 70 cities and have over 1,500 battery swapping stations. For reference, as of the end of August this year, NIO, a car manufacturer that primarily uses the battery swapping model, has set up a total of 2,495 swapping stations.

CATL entered the battery swapping field in 2022, launching the EVOGO brand for passenger car battery swapping and introducing the Chocolate Swap Block technology. A single swap block can provide a range of about 200 kilometers. Battery swapping users can choose one or more chocolate swap blocks to meet different mileage needs. Under the battery swapping model, car buyers do not need to bear the cost of the battery, which can reduce the purchase cost of new energy vehicles.

So far, CATL’s battery swapping stations cover cities like Xiamen, Fuzhou, Hefei, and Guiyang. In Xiamen, where it first set up battery swapping stations, 12 stations have already been put into operation.

This year, CATL has been very active in the battery swapping field. It first established a battery swapping joint venture with DiDi, collaborating on setting up battery swapping stations and promoting battery swapping models. Subsequently, CATL successively reached cooperation agreements with GAC Aion and BAIC Group to jointly promote the development of battery swapping models and regional cooperation in battery swapping stations.
