Chief Scientist at DiDi Labs in Los Angeles Kevin Knight Leaves Company
Recently, Kevin Knight, the former chief scientist of the natural language processing (NLP) team of DiDi Labs in Los Angeles, announced on his LinkedIn page that he would leave the lab.
Later, he updated his performance time at DiDi on LinkedIn’s homepage – from June 2018 to March 2022.
Kevin Knight is best known as NLP chief scientist of DiDi Labs, dean professor of computer science department of University of Southern California (USC) and president of Association for Computational Linguistics 2011.
Knight studied at Harvard University from 1982 to 1986 and obtained a bachelor’s degree in computer science. After graduation, he went to Carnegie Mellon University’s Institute of Language Technology to study NLP and obtained a PHD degree in 1991.
Since joining USC in September 1992, he has been teaching at the university for nearly 30 years, and has written more than 150 research papers, covering artificial intelligence, NLP, machine translation, dialogue processing and other related topics.
In June 2018, Knight announced that he would join DiDi Labs in Los Angeles. At that time, DiDi was in its golden age of rapid development. As an expert in machine translation, Knight has been working on NLP research within DiDi for the past few years.
According to DiDi Labs’ official website, the purpose of setting up an NLP team is to support natural and efficient communication among drivers, passengers, customer service representatives and cars. DiDi has also developed tools to help customer service identify customers’ problems and respond quickly.

In addition to developing NLP technology helpful for travelling, DiDi’s Los Angeles branch is engaged in basic artificial intelligence research, focusing on neural network sequence model and artificial intelligence with environmental awareness.
