China Has Built Nearly 1.6 Million 5G Base Stations
As of the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2022 on Tuesday, nearly 1.6 million 5G base stations had been built in China, according to a report by domestic media outlet Economic Information Daily. China has reportedly become the first country in the world to build 5G networks based on independent networking.
Zhang Yunming, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), said that China’s infrastructure is now more solid and powerful. Fixed broadband has been upgraded from 100 megabits to gigabits, and the proportion of optical fiber users has increased from less than 10% in 2012 to 94.3% in 2021. As of March 2022, the number of IPv6 active users in the country accounted for 63.01% of all web users, and the applied IPv6 address resources ranked first in the world.
In addition, 5G applications now cover many fields of life including transportation, medical care, education, and cultural tourism, with more than 20,000 documented application cases. Industrial internet has been applied to 45 major economic categories, covering R&D and design, manufacturing, and marketing services, with an industrial scale exceeding one trillion yuan ($148 billion).

Next, Chinese regulators aim to systematically improve the construction of 5G, gigabit optical networks and data centers, deepen the integration of networks, cloud computing and edge computing while deeply and broadly promoting these initiatives.
At the same time, new technologies such as big data, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and blockchain will be used to transform and upgrade traditional infrastructure, and build a leading edge in technological innovation. Digital infrastructure will be promoted to help the construction and development of intelligent transportation, smart grid, smart water conservation and smart city functions.
