China Reports 1.3M Newly Built Charging Piles in H1 2022
On August 2, China’s National Energy Administration held an online press conference to announce the country’s current energy situation and grid-connected operations of renewable energy in the first half of 2022.
In the first half of the year, local departments promoted the construction of charging infrastructure. From January to June, 1.3 million charging piles were reportedly built nationwide – 3.8 times that of the same period last year. The construction of hydrogenation network has also been promoted as a whole. By the end of June, more than 270 hydrogenation stations had been built nationwide. In the first half of this year, the investment volume increased by 15.9% year-on-year.
In the first half of 2022, the newly installed capacity of renewable energy power in China was 54.75 million kilowatts, accounting for 80% of the newly installed capacity of power generation in China. Among them, hydropower increased by 9.41 million kilowatts, wind power increased by 12.94 million kilowatts, photovoltaic power increased by 30.88 million kilowatts, and biomass power increased by 1.52 million kilowatts, accounting for 13.6%, 18.7%, 44.7% and 2.2% of the newly installed capacity in China, respectively.
By the end of June 2022, the installed capacity of renewable energy power in China reached 1.118 billion kilowatts. Among them, the installed capacity of hydropower is 400 million kilowatts (including 42 million kilowatts of pumped storage), wind power is 342 million kilowatts, photovoltaic power is 336 million kilowatts, and biomass power is 39.5 million kilowatts.

In addition, the power generation of China’s renewable energy sector has increased steadily. In the first half of 2022, the national renewable energy generation capacity reached 1.25 trillion kWh. Renewable energy continues to maintain a high utilization rate. In the first half of 2022, the utilization rate of water energy in major river basins in China was about 98.6%, an increase of 0.2 percentage points over the same period of last year. The national average utilization rate of wind power was 95.8%, a decrease of 0.6 percentage points over the same period of last year. Meanwhile, the national average utilization rate of photovoltaic power generation was 97.7%, down 0.2 percentage points from the same period of last year.
China’s National Energy Administration also stated that the effective investment in the domestic energy sector is increasing. It has promoted the implementation of a number of energy projects, and approved six nuclear power units for three projects in Zhejiang, Shandong and Guangdong provinces. 10 hydropower and pumped storage units were also put into operation. The first batch of large-scale wind power photovoltaic base projects focusing on desert areas have started construction, and the list of the second batch of base projects has also been issued.
