China’s Fujian aircraft carrier successfully conducted its first catapult takeoffs and landings with J-15T, J-35, and KJ-600 aircraft, marking a pivotal step in naval modernization and electromagnetic system integration.
The Chinese Navy recently achieved a milestone aboard the Fujian aircraft carrier, successfully conducting the first catapult takeoffs and landings of J-15T, J-35, and KJ-600 carrier-based aircraft. These aircraft, showcased at the 80th anniversary parade commemorating the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, signal the Fujian’s initial electromagnetic catapult and arrestor recovery capabilities.
Multiple prior tests saw Navy pilots execute successful takeoffs and landings, validating the compatibility of China’s indigenously developed electromagnetic catapult and arrestor systems with various aircraft types. This progress equips the Fujian with preliminary full-deck operational capacity, laying a foundation for integrating diverse aircraft into carrier strike groups.
In recent years, China’s naval aviation has accelerated, transitioning from single aircraft to integrated systems, shore-based to carrier-based operations, ski-jump to catapult launches, and from flight capability to combat readiness, advancing steadily toward a world-class navy.
Since its first sea trial in May 2024, the Fujian has systematically conducted maritime tests, refining equipment and overall stability. Observers note that the successful operations of these three aircraft types mark a pivotal breakthrough in China’s carrier development, bolstering naval modernization efforts.
