China’s First 5G Real-time VR Transmission Test Conducted for Spring Festival Gala
Chinese state media China Media Group, in partnership with telecom operator China Unicom and tech giant Huawei, completed China’s first real-time VR transmission test through 5G network on Jan. 28.
On the night of Feb. 4, the Chinese New Year’s Eve, CCTV Spring Festival Gala will transmit live panorama signals from two sub-venues in northern Changchun and southern Shenzhen through a 5G network.

During the upcoming Spring Festival Gala warm-up programs, CCTV will provide the audience VR panoramic interaction to bring them a new visual experience. Meanwhile, Spring Festival-themed VR short videos will be uploaded to social media platforms, all in an effort to create an immersive experience for viewers.
The test this time was another achievement after the success of 4K high-definition content streaming through a 5G network for the first time on Jan. 13. Both tests were conducted on China’s first national 5G new media platform. China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom and Huawei participated in the construction of the platform.
Currently, the platform has completed laboratory planning and preparation. In the future, the platform will develop and test 5G applications such as 4K ultra high definition video transmission, 4K VR live production, 4K video mobile editing and 4K mobile projection through 5G networks.
China Media Group was founded in March last year. It combines China Central Television, China National Radio, and China Radio International.
