China’s Total New Energy Vehicle Count Exceeds 10 Million

According to data released on July 6 by the Chinese Traffic Administration Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security, as of the end of June, the total number of cars in China reached 406 million units, including 310 million automobiles and 10.01 million new energy vehicles.

By the end of June, China’s new energy vehicle quantity accounted for 3.23% of the total number of vehicles. Among them, pure EVs amounted to 8.104 million, accounting for 80.93% of the total number of new energy vehicles. In the first half of the year, 2.209 million new energy vehicles were newly registered. Compared with the first half of last year, there was an increase of 1.106 million or 100.26% of newly registered vehicles, creating a record high.

In the first half of 2022, there were 16.57 million newly registered motor vehicles in China, a decrease of 2.14 million or 11.43% compared with the same period of last year. In Q1, the number of new motor vehicle registrations was the same as that of the same period of last year. Affected by the pandemic, the number of new motor vehicle registrations in April and May were significantly lower than that of the same period last year. However, with the acceleration of the resumption of work and production in the automobile industry, the number of newly registered motor vehicles reached 2.7 million in June, which was basically the same as last June.

By the end of June, there were 81 cities in China whose total car count surpassed 1 million units, a year-on-year increase of seven cities, with 37 cities exceeding 2 million and 20 cities exceeding 3 million. Notably, Beijing’s car total exceeds more than 6 million, while Chengdu and Chongqing saw their totals surpass over 5 million units. The respective car population of Suzhou, Shanghai, Zhengzhou, Xi’an and Wuhan all exceeded 4 million units.

In addition, there were 492 million motor vehicle drivers in China, of which 454 million were automobile drivers, accounting for 92.38% of the total number of drivers. In the first half of 2022, the number of newly licensed drivers in China was 11.03 million.
