Chinese New Energy Vehicle Companies Announce April Deliveries

A range of Chinese new energy vehicle companies have recently reported their April delivery results. COVID-19 outbreaks in Shanghai and Jilin have adversely affected supply chains across the country, and car companies were under greater pressure to deliver during the period.

Shenzhen-based BYD sold 105,475 NEVs in April. Specifically, its Dynasty series sold 87,348 vehicles, Ocean series sold 18,127, E Series sold 1,655, Dolphin sold 12,040, Destroyer 05 sold 2,040 and other models sold 2,392.

Meanwhile, Leapmotor delivered 9,087 cars during the period, up 228% year-on-year and ranking on top for the first time among new automakers in terms of monthly delivery volume. From this January to April, Leapmotor delivered a total of 30,666 cars. The company is also preparing to go public on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEx). In March, Leapmotor released a prospectus for the move, indicating that 40% of net fundraising will be used for R&D of new models and automated driving technology.

Also in April, XPeng Motors delivered 9,002 vehicles, up 75% year-on-year. Specifically, XPeng P7 delivered 3,714 units, P5 delivered 3,564 and G3 series delivered 1,724. From January to April, XPeng delivered a total of 43,563 units, a year-on-year increase of 136%.

Hozon Auto delivered 8,813 cars during the month, including 5,694 V models and 3,119 U models – year-on-year increases of 48% and 1746% respectively. From January to April, Hozon Auto delivered a total of 38,965 cars, up 240% year-on-year. Hozon Auto has achieved annual growth for 22 consecutive months since July 2020.

The delivery volume of NIO and Li Auto in April was 5,074 and 4,167 respectively. NIO suspended car manufacturing for a short period in April. On April 14, NIO said that supply chains had recovered slightly and that its Hefei production base was gradually resuming production, but the follow-up plans still depended on the recovery of logistics networks.

Shen Yanan, the co-founder and President of Li Auto, said: “Affected by the pandemic in the Yangtze River Delta, some suppliers in Shanghai and Kunshan, Jiangsu Province, could not supply, and some even stopped production and transportation. As a result, it was impossible to maintain production after the parts inventory was exhausted.”
