Douyin and TikTok Garner $266 Million in January

On Wednesday, Sensor Tower released data that in January 2022, TikTok and Douyin earned a total of $266 million through Apple’s App Store and Google Play, 2.1 times that of January of 2020. It remains the highest revenue generating non-game app globally.

Specifically, about 36.5% of the revenue comes from China’s iOS version of Douyin, 21.4% from the US market, the second largest source of income, while 3.6% is from the German market, the third largest source of income.

Google One ranked second with nearly $120 million in revenue, up 139% from that of January of 2020. For Google One, it earned 68% of its revenue from the US market, and only 2.6% from the Japanese market, its second largest market. The three other apps in the top five are YouTube, Disney+ and Tinder. Chinese video platforms Tencent Video and iQiyi, rank eighth and ninth respectively.

Chinese games have also performed brilliantly in overseas markets. According to Sensor Tower, the overseas revenue of MiHoYo’s “Genshin Impact” mobile game increased by 51% month-on-month, significantly outperforming that of “Candy Crush Saga” and “Roblox”, becoming the mobile game with the highest revenue in overseas markets.
