It is the first time the most highly-downloaded Chinese application has revealed the number of users it has. On its Weibo account, Douyin (or Tik Tok as its known overseas), said that it currently has about 150 million Chinese users accessing and watching video content on its application every day. This comes after a mere 21 months since its establishment.
Douyin’s monthly active users (MAU) has also exceeded 300 million. During the Spring Festival in February, its daily users surged from less than 40 million to nearly 70 million in less than a month.
The platform has evolved from simple short-videos to one that sports a collection of multi-element content ranging from social affairs to food and culture, to parent-child relations, and even travel documentation according to Zhi Ying, marketing general manager of Douyin.
Additionally, Douyin has seen an increase in users. Now, over 40% of their users are aged from 24 to 30, while previously the app’s largest user group was aged 18 to 24.
In the meantime, government affairs, education, traditional culture, technology and photography are also popular subjects. Over 500 government organizations and media, including People.cn, CCTV, and SASAC, have set up their accounts on Douyin and videos regarding government affairs have garnered over 1.6 billion views in total.
Douyin has launched its overseas versions of TikTok and musical.ly in countries such as Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia. At present, these two products have covered more than 150 countries and regions worldwide. According to App Annie, a third-party organization, the two products have reached top ranks in app stores in over 40 countries.
Zhang Yiming, founder and CEO of Toutiao, said that the key goal for the company in 2018 would be globalization and he hopes that in the next three years, 50% of its users will be from overseas.
