Douyin’s Soda Music Starts Public Testing
Soda Music, a music platform owned by ByteDance’s Douyin, is now available on all major app stores and is open to all users. In April of this year, Soda Music started alpha testing and released invitation codes for users to register.
Before registration, Soda Music allows users to choose their favorite categories from 15 music styles, such as pop, rock, folk, traditional Chinese style and hip hop, and provides five language categories including Mandarin, Europe and America, Japanese, Korean and Cantonese.
Soda Music carries forward ByteDance’s strategy of “algorithm as top priority.” It first learns about user preferences, then pushes songs in a targeted and focused way to enhance the user experience, thus further improving user stickiness. Also, Soda Music’s logo is similar to Douyin, with a musical note as the main icon.
The main interface of Soda Music is simple now, only consisting of three first-level entrances: Music, Discovery and Me. Similar to Douyin, Soda Music adopts the mode of sliding up and down to change songs, which is quite different from the current leading music platforms such as QQ Music and NetEase Cloud Music.

According to an introduction of Soda Music on the app store, the platform mainly provides personally-recommended songs and updates the music collection of users on Douyin. In terms of member subscription, Soda Music offers three options: 8 yuan per month, 44 yuan per six months or 88 yuan per year.
In 2019, ByteDance launched a music platform called Resso overseas, whose main markets were India, Indonesia and Brazil. Douyin – the Chinese mainland version of TikTok – did not launch a domestic version. Resso and Soda Music are very similar in terms of their interface design. There has been a lot of speculation about the relationship between the teams involved. In response, some related sources revealed to 21st Century Business Herald that Resso and Soda Music are independent products, and that the operation teams are independent from each other.
