Geely-Backed ECARX Kicks Off Strategic Cooperation With AMD

Geely-backed auto parts supplier ECARX announced on August 5 that it has reached a strategic cooperation agreement with AMD, an American semiconductor company. The two sides will build an on-board computing platform for the next generation of electric vehicles (EVs), which is expected to be mass-produced in the global market by the end of 2023.

ECARX pointed out that the digital cockpit they develop will have many advanced functions, such as games and an immensive 3D user experience, and it will be the first vehicle-mounted platform that adopts AMD Ryzen Embedded V2000 Series Processors and AMD Radeon RX 6000 series GPU. It will also combine ECARX technology.

The digital cockpit will support a driver information module, head-up display system, rear seat entertainment, multi-screen display, multi-tone voice recognition, high-end games and an immensive 3D user experience.

ECARX is AMD’s first digital cockpit strategic partner in China. Shen Ziyu, Chairman and CEO of ECARX, said that the global automobile industry is transforming to intelligence at an unprecedented speed, and the demand for computing power and graphics ability is also growing rapidly. It is hoped that with this cooperation, OEM manufacturers and tier one suppliers will be further supported to enhance their digital cockpit experience, and help enterprises to create greater value for consumers through smart interconnected vehicles.

According to the data, the AMD Ryzen Embedded V2000 series processor is the second generation product specially designed for automotive infotainment and instrumentation, industrial computing, thin clients and mini computer systems. It can support four independent displays with 4K resolution at the same time, and is equipped with eight CPU cores and seven GPU computing units.

The AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series GPU is built on AMD RDNA 2 graphics architecture. Compared with the previous generation, AMD RDNA 2 architecture can provide up to two times the performance in specific games and improve the performance per unit power consumption by up to 50%.
