Geely-Backed Polestar Unveils First Pure Electric SUV

Polestar, a premium electric vehicle brand jointly owned by Volvo and Geely, on October 13 unveiled its first all-electric SUV, the Polestar 3. The model will be made available on the Chinese market in two versions for 880,000 yuan ($122,388) and 1.03 million yuan ($143,210).

The new car will make its formal China debut during the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2023. It will start production at a plant in Chengdu plant in mid-2023, and the first deliveries are expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2023.

The length, width and height of Polestar 3 are 4,900/2,120/1,627mm respectively, and the wheelbase is 2,985 mm. The interior adopts a minimalist design with fewer physical buttons, a full LCD instrument panel and a vertical central control screen. In China, Polestar will also cooperate with intelligent speech and artificial intelligence firm iFlytek, web mapping service provider AutoNavi, Huawei’s app store, NetEase Cloud Music to provide a rich in-vehicle interconnection experience.

Equipped with five radar modules, five external cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors, the Polestar 3 provides advanced safety features. There are two closed-loop driver monitoring cameras in the cockpit that ensure safe driving.

All versions of the Polestar 3 come standard with air suspension, a panoramic sunroof, full LED lights inside and out, hidden door handles with sensing, and 21-inch alloy wheels.

The first two versions come standard with the Plus Pack and the Pilot Pack, including a 25-speaker from Bowers & Wilkins, Dolby Atmos, electric suction doors, HUD and pilot assist.

The dual-motor long-range version can provide maximum power of 360kW and a maximum torque of 840N · m, and 0-100 km/h acceleration in 5 seconds. The dual-motor high-performance version can reach a maximum power of 380kW and a maximum torque of 910N · m, and 0-100 km/h acceleration in 4.7 seconds.

Both cars are equipped with 111kWh battery packs. The dual-motor long-range version has a target range of 670 km under CLTC conditions, while the dual-motor high-performance version has a target range of 620 km under CLTC conditions. The Polestar 3 can be charged from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes using a 250kW charger, or 10% to 100% in 11 hours using an 11kW home charger.

Before the launch of the Polestar 3, the brand had only launched two products – a plug-in hybrid model, the Polestar 1, and an all-electric sedan, the Polestar 2. According to the plan, starting with Polestar 3, a new pure electric product will be launched every year over the next three years, and it is planned to increase the number of global sales markets to 30 by the end of 2023. Polestar’s annual global sales are expected to double tenfold to about 290,000 units by the end of 2025.
