Google Cloud’s Greater China President Kathy Lee May Step Down

Google Cloud‘s Greater China President Kathy Lee may step down, and it is rumored that her position will be taken over by former Microsoft Greater China Vice President and Head of Consumer and Device Business Bin Shen.

Multiple sources said that the main reason for this personnel change is internal power struggles. Previously, there have been rumors of discord between Kathy Lee and Google Asia Pacific.

Kathy Lee had previously worked at AWS China, where she collaborated with the first leader of AWS China, Alex Yung.

During Kathy Lee’s tenure, ByteDance Overseas and SHEIN were two major pillar clients for Google Cloud in China; however, progress with other new major clients has been unsatisfactory. As a result, Kathy Lee’s leadership capabilities as head of Google Cloud in China have been questioned.

Regarding potential successor Bin Shen – according to Microsoft’s official website news – he previously served as President of Honeywell in China; Vice President of Corporate Strategy & New Business Development at Verizon Communications; Vice President & General Manager for Mobile Terminal Business Division Asia Product Management at Motorola among various other positions.

Bin Shen joined Microsoft in July 2019 as Vice President for Consumer & Devices Division reporting to Ami Silverman who was then Senior Vice President Global Sales Leader for Consumer & Devices Division at Microsoft. After 2022, Bin Shen began serving as Corporate VP Global Partner Solutions based out of the United States.

According to industry insiders’ disclosures, Google Cloud aims to achieve $1.2 billion revenue target in mainland China by 2024. Revenue from 2023 is expected to be above this line with a primary goal for 2024 being maintaining revenue levels without decline.
