Great Wall Motor to Build Third-Generation Chip Module Base

Chinese automobile manufacturer Great Wall Motor announced on August 16 that it has signed a strategic cooperation contract with the Xishan Economic and Technological Development Zone in Jiangsu province.

The headquarters of Wuxi UtmoLight Technology Co., Ltd., including a perovskite innovation industrial base project and the third-generation semiconductor module packaging and testing manufacturing base project of HYCET Technology Co., Ltd., a company under Great Wall Motor, will be built in Xishan, with a total investment of 3.8 billion yuan ($560.4 million).

The signed project of Wuxi UtmoLight’s headquarters and the Perovskite Innovation Industrial Base will have investment of 3 billion yuan with a total area of 156 mu (around 25.7 acres). It is planned to build the world’s first GW-grade perovskite photovoltaic module and BIPV product production line, a 100-ton perovskite quantum dot production line, a global innovation center and headquarters building, with an estimated annual output value of 2.5 billion yuan.

Wuxi UtmoLight is an enterprise specializing in the R&D and manufacturing of perovskite photovoltaic and perovskite photoelectric products. It has completed a pre-A round of financing worth 220 million yuan, and has built the world’s largest trial production line of 150MW perovskite photovoltaic modules.

At the same time, the third-generation semiconductor module packaging and testing manufacturing base project will see a total investment of about 800 million yuan, an area of about 30 mu, a building area of about 28,000 m². It has a planned annual production capacity of 1.2 million sets of auto-grade modules.

After the project is fully put into production, it is estimated that annual revenue will reach 1.5 billion yuan and tax payment will reach 100 million yuan. This project originates from the business of HYCET, a subsidiary of Great Wall Motor. In the future, it is planned to build a high-tech semiconductor company integrating the R&D, production and sales of vehicle-level power modules by adopting the mode of “upstream raw material deep cooperation + self-built semiconductor business.”

Great Wall Motor said that the third-generation semiconductor modules will be applied to the main inverter and charging field of new energy vehicles. Featuring superior physical properties, they are more suited for manufacturing high-frequency and high-power components with high temperature resistance, high voltage resistance and large current resistance. They can help the efficient conversion of electricity in the fields of new energy vehicles, photovoltaics, DC UHV transmission and consumer power supply. Therefore, the completion of this project will open up new development space for the electric transformation of Great Wall Motor.
