Honor 50 Series to Launch in June with Qualcomm’s New Snapdragon 778G Chipset
Chinese budget smartphone brand Honor has announced that its upcoming Honor 50 series will be the first phone to be powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 778G 5G chipset.
The premium smartphone lineup will launch in June, Honor chief executive Zhao Ming said on Friday at the Qualcomm China Tech Day, unveiling the partnership with the San Diego-based mobile chipset company.
“In just six month’s time, Honor and Qualcomm engineers worked through countless problems together. Both teams did not get any rest during the entire Spring Festival holiday. We had hoped that the launch of the Honor 50 series can match that of the Qualcomm 778G chipset,” Zhao said, adding that Honor’s Magic series will also ship with premium Qualcomm chipsets, without specifying precise models.
“The next product to launch in the Honor Magic series will be the Magic 3, which will undoubtedly be powered by the most advanced flagship chipset in the industry at the time of its release,” Zhao said.
“I am very confident that people will be swapping their phones after seeing the new Magic series,” he added.
While few details have been revealed about the Honor 50, earlier reports have indicated that the device will feature a 50MP main camera in a triple rear camera setup. Other tipped highlights include a 6.79-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, and the rest of the lineup is expected to include the Honor 50 Pro and Honor 50 Pro+.
Both the Honor 50 series and Honor Magic flagship are expected to ship with Google services on board, reports added.

The company, which was sold by Huawei Technologies in November and is now owned by Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology, has immediately resumed partnerships with past suppliers – including AMD, Qualcomm, Samsung, Microsoft, Intel and MediaTek. It has since launched the Honor V40 5G smartphone, the Honor Band 6 and the MagicBook Pro 2021 laptop.
The Snapdragon 778G, which was also unveiled at Qualcomm’s annual two-day 5G summit last week, is a new 6nm variant of the more powerful Snapdragon 780G chipset, which was announced in March. Just like other Snapdragon 700-series chipsets, the 778G also includes some of the premium features from the top-tier Snapdragon 800-series.
“Snapdragon 778G was developed to address the growing demand by global OEMs for more platform options in the high-tier,” said Kedar Kondap, Qualcomm’s vice president of product management.
Calling it an “ultimate multimedia triple threat,” Qualcomm said the new chipset features offers three image-signal processors, or ISPs, making the device capable of capturing photos and videos from three different lenses at the same time, including in wide, ultra-wide and zoom modes. It also supports HDR10+ video recording.
With the latest 6th generation Qualcomm AI Engine, the processor is able to offer better AI-based noise suppression and camera experiences during video calls, as well as improvements on mobile gaming experiences by reducing the GPU workload.
With Qualcomm’s FastConnect 6700 Connectivity System, the chipset enables 5G connectivity, while also supporting Bluetooth 5.2 and WiFi 6 speeds. The 778G will start appearing in other premium midrange phones from manufacturers including iQOO, Motorola, OPPO, Realme and Xiaomi throughout the next few months, the company added.
