Huawei Launches New Flagship Nova 4 Featuring an In-Screen Camera

Huawei launched the new flagship of the Nova series, the Huawei Nova 4, on Dec. 17, featuring the “pole” bezel-less design. Jackson Yee, the famous Chinese pop star and the brand’s spokesperson also came to the event.

The phone has a 6.4-inch display with a resolution of 2310 X 1080 pixels and runs on the Android v8.1 (Oreo) OS. It reaches a new level of bezel-less design as its screen-to-body ratio reaches 86.3 percent compared with the 83.4 percent of the older generation’s Nova 3. It is the first in the industry to make the selfie-camera hidden in the screen, avoiding the disputable notch design.

The small pinhole used for selfie-taking is tiny compared to other smartphones’, with a diameter of only 4.5 mm. Mr He Gang, the director of Huawei’s smartphone line dubbed it as the “blind hole” design of Nova 4. The mentality behind the design of the small pinhole is “no disturbance”, meaning that it won’t disturb users when using the other apps in the interface.

It is also worth mentioning that the phone comes in four stunning colors, blue, red, pearl white, and black. The white one glows like pearls under the light. The name of the blue edition literally translates to “sweet voice blue” which is inspired by the brand’s spokesperson, the singer Jackson Yee. He also mentions that his favorite color is the “sweet words” red.

As for cameras, the phone has triple rear cameras. The high-end version has an impressive 48MP camera with f/1.8 aperture, 16MP super-wide lens with f/2.2 aperture. Apart from this, it also has a 25MP front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture, with AI beautifying effects that recognizes seven types of face shapes. Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) ensures perfect and smooth video taking. Users can also add 3D emojis to their own short videos.

Huawei Nova 4 has a chipset of Kirin 970, with a storage combination of 8GB and 128 GB. Other features include AI voice assistant Xiao Yi, which can help users order afternoon tea, as well as estimating calorie count. All you need to do is to take photos of your food before your meals, and the phone can estimate the calories for you, which is a good news for those sticking to a diet.

During the event, Huawei also launched the Huawei Matebook 13 and Huawei Enjoy 9.

It was also announced that the total shipments of Huawei smartphones is expected to reach 200 million by the end of 2018. To mark this occasion, a special edition phone will be launched on December 25.

As for pricing, the standard version of Huawei Nova 4 will be priced at 3099 yuan ($450), with the high-end version (48MP main camera) priced at 3399 yuan ($493). The device will be available for pre-orders from 4:08 p.m. on December 17, and official sales will start at 10:08 a.m. on December 27.
