Huawei Mate 40 Series to Be First Smartphone to Support China’s New Digital Yuan

Huawei Mate 40 series will feature a built-in hardware wallet for the Chinese digital yuan, announced Chengdong Yu, CEO of Huawei’s Consumer Business on Friday. It is the first smartphone that supports the digital yuan hardware wallet.

The Huawei Mate 40 series boasts hardware-level security and anonymity protection, creating a beneficial environment for the use of the digital yuan on mobile phones, the company said.

The dual offline transactions will create a safe and convenient payment experience. With a phone number, users can access their hardware wallet through their Huawei smartphone to use the digital yuan. Payments can be completed by touching devices together, even in places with poor reception.

Huawei actively engaged in the research of regulations for the hardware wallet and provided technological support for the construction of offline transactions and other wallet functions such as deposit/withdrawal and making payments. In addition, Huawei is actively pushing the innovation and practice of the digital yuan in Shenzhen.

Huawei’s hardware wallet provides convenient payment and card management services. The company has already partnered with more than 130 banks, including more than 1,600 POS machines featuring UnionPay’s mobile payment. Huawei Card, the exclusive credit card for Huawei users, have been available for use in 151 Chinese cities, and users in more than 200,000 communities are using AI PASS NFC, Huawei’s digital door key.

In more than 300 Chinese cities, users can easily take the bus and subway with a simple touch of Huawei’s digital wallet.

Huawei’s Mate 40 series made its official debut in China on Friday. The Mate 40 Pro, Mate 40 Pro + and the Mate 40 RS Porsche Design went on sale Friday, and the Mate 40 will be available for sale on Dec. 21.
