Huawei Releases 2021 Sustainable Development Report
On August 17, Huawei released its 2021 Sustainable Development Report, focusing on the four strategies of “digital inclusion, security and credibility, environmental protection and harmonious ecology.” It disclosed the main progress achieved in the past year and its contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Through its “TECH4ALL” initiative, Huawei cooperates with partners to create projects, and continuously expands the achievements of digital inclusion in three aspects: technology, application and skills. More than 400 schools and 110,000 teachers, students and unemployed young people around the world access the internet through this project to learn digital skills and improve scientific and technological literacy. Through the use of digital technology, TECH4ALL helps 32 protected areas in 25 countries to improve the efficiency of biodiversity conservation. Every month, more than 4.4 million visually impaired users and over 800,000 hearing impaired users use Huawei devices’ barrier-free functions and enjoy the convenience brought about by technology.
In terms of security and credibility, Huawei regards network security and privacy protection as the company’s highest program, and it has obtained more than 70 network security certification certificates throughout the year, allowing customers to obtain internationally recognized security guarantees. It has handled more than 20,000 data subject requests in a timely and effective manner to respect and protect user privacy. A total of 35 AEO certificates have been obtained by Huawei in 28 countries and regions on five continents, ensuring supply chain security. As for emergency responses, more than 180 sudden disasters and major events around the world were dealt with to ensure smooth communication among people.

Huawei is committed to reducing the impact of production, operation and the whole life cycle of products and services on the environment, promoting energy conservation, emission reduction and circular economy development in various industries, all through innovative products and solutions. It continuously works with all parties in the industrial chain to build a low-carbon society.
The average energy efficiency of Huawei’s main products has increased to 1.9 times that of 2019 (base year). In 2021, the renewable energy used reached more than 300 million kWh, an increase of 42.3% over the previous year. The firm also promoted 98% of its top 100 suppliers and high-energy suppliers to set carbon emission reduction targets. Compared with its P40 series, the content of packaging plastic in the new generation P50 flagship smartphone series has been reduced by 89%, and the proportion of plastic is now less than 1%.
In 2021, Huawei’s global employee security investment reached more than 15 billion yuan ($2.2 billion). In 2021, the R&D expenditure was 142.7 billion yuan, accounting for 22.4% of its annual income. More than 1,600 major suppliers have been evaluated for sustainable development performance. The company has also carried out more than 400 public welfare activities around the world.
According to the firm’s financial report, In the first half of 2022, Huawei achieved sales revenue of 301.6 billion yuan and a net profit margin of 5.0%. Among them, operator business income was 142.7 billion yuan, enterprise business income was 54.7 billion yuan, and terminal business income was 101.3 billion yuan.
