Huawei’s Poke at Black Friday Triggers Discussion among Netizens

On Tuesday, Huawei’s official US account tweeted out several ridiculous messages in preparation for the approaching Black Friday sales event. One tweet in particular stated that the company was offering “100% OFF all phones we currently sell in the US.” Later, Huawei added, “It’s just a joke. We can’t sell anything in the USA.”

In this regard, some Twitter users replyed, “Black Friday meets April Fools.” and “Tweet of the Year award goes to Huawei”.

In 2019, the United States listed Huawei on an “entity list”. Any company on this list cannot work with U.S. enterprises without the permission of the US government.

In May 2020, the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) of the US Department of Commerce issued an announcement requiring that chips produced with American technology and equipment must be approved by the government before being sold to Huawei. In August 2020, the BIS issued a revised ban on Huawei, which further restricted Huawei’s use of American technology and software, and added 38 Huawei subsidiaries to the entity list.

In the past two years, following rounds of sanctions by the United States, Huawei’s mobile phone business has been stunted. In addition, the Chinese manufacturer has hit a bottleneck in the production of its Kirin chips. Presently, Huawei has no choice but to use Qualcomm chips, but is only able to use 4G chips.

Huawei’s mobile phone business still has a chance to return to its peak. According to media reports, Huawei’s consumer business CEO, Yu Chengdong, said at an internal consumer business presentation that Huawei’s mobile phone business will continue to stay alive. He hopes that by 2023, the business will bounce back.
