JD.com Builds China’s First Carbon-Neutral Intelligent Industrial Park

Chinese tech and e-commerce giant JD.com announced on Wednesday that its “Asia No.1” logistics park in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, has obtained certificates for carbon neutrality issued by China Beijing Environmental Exchange (CBEEX) and Centre Testing International (CTI), becoming the first carbon-neutral intelligent industrial park in the domestic logistics industry.

The park adopts a rooftop-distributed solar PV system and an energy storage system to independently neutralize greenhouse gas emissions. Under the support and guidance of CBEEX, the remaining emissions were offset by purchasing China Certified Emission Reduction (CCER) carbon credits.

The industrial park was put into use in 2019. In the process of promoting carbon neutrality, on the one hand, it relies on abundant local sunshine resources to obtain sustainable renewable power through photovoltaic power generation and energy storage facilities. On the other hand, the energy efficiency of the park can be optimized by improving the energy-saving management system, sorting and transportation processes, and introducing special equipment.

The logistics industry is the intermediary between production and consumption, and it is an important starting point in driving enterprises to develop green supply chains. At present, JD.com has formed a whole-emissions reduction link through green energy, pursued efficiency optimization, carried out resource recycling, and implemented advanced technologies.

By the end of 2021, JD.com has completed installation of PV systems at 12 logistics parks. In three years, their production capacity is estimated to reach 1,000 MW – contributing green energy to 85% of JD.com’s intelligent industrial parks. In addition to the park in Xi’an, JD.com‘s “Asia No.1” park in Suqian, Jiangsu Province, is also actively promoting distributed photovoltaic energy, and is expected to be carbon-neutral at the operations level by early 2023.

With the support of advanced technologies including 5G, blockchain and AI, JD.com is also researching an industry solution for carbon neutral parks. JD.com has placed nearly 20,000 new energy vehicles across China and has promoted the use of reduced packaging and circulating express boxes. The new generation green data center on JD Cloud has realized green and efficient computing by using clean electricity.
